Escayola Reflection

Chance is the best thing about theatre. The chance to excel, excite, create new worlds and comment are always accompanied by the chance to fail. For me, this is why theatre is interesting.
I enjoy theatre which consists of actions rather than heavily elaborated representations.

THE ACTION prepare plaster, dip clothes in plaster, put them on, wait for them to dry and remove them.

THE IDEA The action was initially inspired by the idea of control and how we as individuals create images of ourselves. The two ideas, for me, coincide when we begin to be controlled by the images we create and that we, as a society enforce a system of control by creating and complying to patterns.

THE EVOLUTION The action changed within the theatre space. The meaning of the piece of changed and developed due to the theatre context, placing the action in contrast to the action of urination and the final dress design. The action became contextualised in the street, in a world of consumerism and fashion - this was indicated through sound, the shopping bag and type of dress.

THE RESULT The action was not successful during any of th performances. While it is disappointing and failed to show the most interesting part of the action (that is the dropping of the plaster, the sounds of plaster on plastic and the pain of removal) I believe that the failure itself is interesting. As a society striving for order, human fallacy will always lead to some failure.
